St Peter's, Brimpton

 St Peters, Brimpton - geograph

Welcome to St Peter's Church, Brimpton

St Peter's Brimpton sits at the top of the hill in the centre of the village. The village war memorial marks the start of the gravel track that leads to the church and the footpath that starts in the church’s car park is popular with walkers. There are extensive views from the churchyard across to Kingsclere. A ‘Nectar Garden’ has been created in the grounds to attract wildlife. It is believed that there has been a church on the site since Norman times. The current building dates from 1868. We are a friendly church and you will always receive a warm welcome.

St Peter's is one of six churches in the Benefice of Aldermaston and Woolhampton.

ST PETER’S BRIMPTON
CHURCH SPIRE

Thank you to all those who came to the Open Meeting in January and expressed an interest in this project
After many years, the shingles (wooden tiles) on the spire are worn out. Our architect advises that they should be replaced as soon as possible.
The PCC is responsible for maintaining the building, and we have agreed to appoint a working group with appropriate skills from across the community to look into the next steps, raise the necessary funds and manage the project. We are delighted that Philip Turner has agreed to chair the group, at least for the first stage while we assess the viability of the project and begin to raise funds.
Some important points were noted at the meeting:

  • St Peter’s is a Grade 2 listed building with a 40m spire.
  • The likely cost of replacing the shingles is about £500,000, including VAT. We are being advised by a good architect and will make sure we get the best value.
  • The Church of England may be rich, but it does not provide money for projects such as this. Oxford Diocese is likely to provide a grant, but it will be a relatively small contribution. We will need to raise the bulk of the money ourselves.
  • VAT relief is no longer available to Listed Places of Worship, so we will have to pay VAT.
  • The PCC is a charity and can claim Gift Aid on donations.
  • It will be necessary for the contractors to erect scaffolding, for reasons of access and safety. It will not be possible to use a cherry picker or a steeplejack.

Although the usual Sunday congregation is quite small, on special occasions the church is still filled by large numbers of parishioners.
Brimpton Church is at the heart of our community and everyone who lives in the parish is a parishioner of St Peter’s. This is our parish, our church and our spire, and the spire is a local landmark enjoyed and shared by the whole parish.
The working group will make recommendations to the PCC and provide updates to the parish through the pages of the Villages’ News.

Where and When

There are services across the benefice in our six beautiful churches and details can be found on the 'Our Services' page.   Our worship is a mixture of contemporary and traditional.  Refreshments are served after all the services and we invite you to stay for a cuppa - it is a great way to meet people, or simply take time to find your bearings.

BOOK TICKET HERE – Sun 8 AM (IN-PERSON) Holy Communion Worship Service – Christ Methodist Church, Sun 3 Jan 2021 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM

What about my children?

Children are welcome at all of our services, particularly the  more contemporary services.  We really value worshipping God all together as a family.
